WINTER 2011-2012
A Message From the Spiritual DirectorIn the cycle of spirituality, winter is considered a dream time. It is a time for the soul to quiet itself in preparation for the coming resurrection of spring. In the spirit of that preparation Sacred Paths has been exploring the topic of self love. The question that has emerged is why is it so difficult for the human being to love the self? The Course in Miracles says that it is because the ego lives in an illusion. The Course on Love suggests that it is because human beings are confused about what love really is. Christianity suggests that it is because humans are sinners. New Agers argue that is it because the self is in need of healing. Every spiritual/religious tradition seems to agree that something is quite off kilter when it comes to loving the self. Consider the possibility that there is nothing wrong with this apparent gap. Consider the possibility that this discourse between loving the self and struggling to put up with the self is nothing more than the experience of being human and carrying the spark of the divine within your soul. If one subscribes to the notion that there are only two emotions, love and fear, then the possibility exists that we humans are nothing more than love and fear making machines. From a spiritual perspective, when you are making fear, your ego is in charge. When you are making love, your soul is in charge. Relax. You are human. You are going to move between love and fear on a daily if not hourly basis. What's a human to do? Consider the following prayer, based upon the Serenity Prayer. “God / Goddess / Mickey Mouse, (you get to pick how you address the divine), grant me the serenity to accept that at times I live in fear and at times I live in love. When I move into fear grant me the grace to move back into love.” Life is a series of seasons. Whatever the season, there will be times when fear seems to wash over the soul. When you find yourself in that place, consider saying the prayer. Remember that there is nothing wrong and that the divine spark within you is always calling you to love. Travel gently, Steph
